The 2013 ASNC Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC

Please disregard the prior email regarding this Annual Conference.  Please note the information below and direct any questions to Marty Kellogg.  Her address is at the end of this email.
Thank you.

The 2013 ASNC Annual Conference in Charlotte is fast-approaching! …
This year’s Conference will be held earlier – February 8-9 at the Hilton University Place Hotel in Charlotte.   This is a not-to-be-missed event highlighted by great speakers, a wealth of resource information, networking opportunities, and a special way for Chapters to connect with each other.  The theme of this year’s Conference is Autism Grows Up.  It will focus on preparing for adulthood and all that comes with it: family transitions, living and working in the community, and the goal of independence.  Participants will also learn from teaching and behavioral experts on best practices, gain insights about raising girls on the spectrum, and share the lighter side of autism through humor.
Back by popular demand, we are hosting another Chapter Dinner on Friday evening. Invitations will be sent to you in early January, and we will have seating at the Dinner for you, a Co-leader, and Treasurer … or two alternates.  We would love to have each Chapter represented, so start planning now!

We’ve had a number of questions regarding Chapter leader registration.  Unfortunately, we do not have the funds to send Chapter leaders and Treasurers this year, but we are encouraging groups that can to utilize Chapter funds to send a Leader, Co-leader (if applicable), Treasurer or two substitute representatives from your leadership teams. If you choose to use Chapter funds, you will not register online.  Instead,  I’m attaching a registration form specifically for use by Chapter Leader(s), Treasurer or two representatives.  Just complete one form per person and be sure to indicate your Chapter Name and number of days you’re attending, along with your meal choices.  Send directly to me, and  I will take care of debiting your Chapter account (no need for an additional Chapter Check Request).  Hotel registration does need to be done separately online however.

If your Chapter is interested in offering Conference Scholarships for parents or teachers from your County, we encourage you to do so.  Please register Scholarship recipients using the attached form as well.  It would be best to send these forms in together and remember – For every five registrations, the 6th is free!

We also want to remind you of two other options for obtaining financial support to attend the Conference.  You and others may want to look into applying for Jean Wolff-Rossi Participant Involvement Funds or look for funding through your CAP Personal Care Plan.  More information on both of these options is available on the ASNC website or you can click on the following link:http://www.autismsociety-nc.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=428&Itemid=765.

More to come later!  Thanks all … and as always, email me with any questions.

FAN Stewards of Children Workshop 9/8

Stewards of Children Workshop

Where: Freedom House, 102 New Stateside Dr., Chapel Hill, NC 27514

When: Saturday September 8, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM EDT

Dear Friend of FAN:

Recent headline news about the trial of Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky who sexually victimized children entrusted to his care has caused parents across the country to question the safety of their kids when in the care of others. And they should be concerned. Statistics reveal that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday.

Children with special needs have a higher rate of victimization than non-disordered children.

In an effort to help parents and other interested members of the community learn more about child sexual abuse, the Family Advocacy Network (FAN), a program of Mental Health America of the Triangle, proudly presents a training from Darkness to Light, "Stewards of Children: Confronting Child-Sexual Abuse With Courage." The training will be facilitated by Amy Martin-Jewett, RN, Saturday, September 8th, 9:00am to 12:00-noon at Freedom House Recovery Center, 102 New Stateside Dr., Chapel Hill.

Child safety is every adult's responsibility. In this workshop, participants will learn:

  • how to prevent abuse
  • how to recognize warning signs
  • how to react responsibly when it occurs

This workshop is offered free of charge. Donations are gratefully accepted. Training materials and refreshments will be provided. Stewards of Children is an initiative of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA, partnering with FAN and other area organizations in an effort to maximize opportunities for trainings throughout the community.

Registration is limited to 25 participants. Registration will discontinue when maximum registration is reached or on Thursday, September 6th, whichever comes first.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the workshop. I look forward to seeing you on September 8th.

Sincerely,

Georgia Gamcsik, Family Advocate

Free Event: Role of Advocates in Health Care Reform 8/24

From: Titus, Trina
Tue, Jul 31, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Re: URGENT - AUGUST 24 CONFERENCE - PLEASE READ

Hi Coalition, PLLF, and Other Colleagues

On behalf of the Steering Committee for the Patient Advocacy Leaders Summit I want to ask your help in spreading the word far and wide about the PALS conference to be held on Friday, August 24 at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.

The theme of the day is "The Impact of Health Care Reform on Patients: what is the Role of Advocates?" Attendance is aimed at people in advocacy, policy roles - members of your staff, CFAC members, anyone who is interested in public policy around health care reform and how to make an impact for people.

There is no charge for this event - the Steering Committee has received a grant from GSK which is being administered by the NC Psychological Foundation.

*See attached flyer and registration form.*

Due to the funding, licensed providers and state employees are not eligible to attend.

A list of the Steering Committee is posted below.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please send this information out to your networks to encourage people to attend. It is an excellent opportunity to hear from Pam Silberman from the NC Institute of Medicine about what will happen now that the Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act. The person who will be speaking on using social networking and media messaging is an expert who will give us practical advise on these important tools.

Lunch and the afternoon will be devoted to brainstorming about practical ideas and solution in North Carolina.

While this isn't just about behavioral healthcare we want a huge showing from our community.

Please send this far and wide, consider having someone from your staff attend. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions.

Really appreciate your help.

Sally
